Story synopsis
Imprint follows Flora, a determined mother desperate to secure an advantage for her nine-year-old daughter, Ariel, in a cutthroat world. She purchases expertise from Han, an immigrant compelled to trade her hard-earned knowledge for legal status. But as the transfer progresses, it spirals into a living nightmare. What seeps into Ariel’s mind is not just skill—it carries the weight of Han’s struggles and the torment she endured to acquire that knowledge. Flora soon finds herself grappling with the deep, dark price of such progress, haunted by ghosts of suffering she never expected to confront.
Characters
-
Flora (40)
Flora is a privileged, middle-class mother whose care for her daughter is tinged with anxiety. She sees her daughter's success as paramount and is willing to leverage controversial technology to enhance Ariel's academic abilities. Her love is unwavering, and she'll go to any length to secure Ariel a place at the forefront.
-
Ariel (9)
Ariel's grace in dance contrasts sharply with her academic struggles. Her journey as the beneficiary of a knowledge transfer is marred by unexpected side effects that tax her both body and mind, casting a shadow on her youthful innocence.
-
Han (33)
An Asian immigrant, Han's demeanor is quiet, her presence reserved. Battling language barriers, she faces a hard choice: to trade her general education knowledge for a chance at legal status in the U.S. Her silence speaks volumes of the sacrifices made at the altar of opportunity.
director statement
The film delves into the moral lines we cross in the pursuit of success, examining how technology intensifies systemic inequality and how societal systems exploit individuals—especially in education, where parents sacrifice so much for their children's future. But more than that, it forces us to confront a fundamental question: what truly defines a person's intrinsic worth? I may not have all the answers, but through this film, I want to spark that conversation—because even though it's set in a sci-fi world, these issues are already shaping our everyday lives.
